Blog Spam Rant

by Dr Greg Chapman

As this blog is highly ranked by Google (try searching on "Australian Small Business") I get a lot of blog spam.

What do I mean by blog spam?

I mean short comments, often with bad English, usually off topic, and perhaps flattering, all with the purpose of getting a free backlink from a highly ranked website. Some examples (with the link deleted are below).

Thanks for sharing your post and it was superb. I would like to hear more from you in future too.

This blog was absolutely fantastic. lots of great information and inspiration, both which we all need it.

Recently, most of the business owner published their product through internet, sometimes from social media and some of them are through blogging or commenting.

Trying to flatter me is not the way to get your comment posted. You must add to the conversation. These people, often hired low cost, international SEO businesses trawl around for blogs that accept comments. They are trying to get a free ride from someone else’s marketing efforts without contributing anything of value.

(By the way, if you are hiring one of these companies to promote your business, think what it says about you!)

I am quite happy to host backlinks for comments that are thoughtful and interesting. I don’t even care if you want to disagree with what I say. Just disagree politely and explain why. That is how you can earn a backlink from this blog.

The purpose of this blog is not for the direct promotion of YOUR business, but backlinks are allowed as an acknowledgement of your contribution. However I do allow people to promote their business on my Facebook Page (see the link below) but please contribute to the conversation.

As a marketing practitioner, I would never complain about good, creative marketing, but I do draw the line at spam.

Having got that off my chest, please leave a comment below!
